The mayor of Bogota has vowed to mobilse supporters if his controversial sacking is confirmed. Leftist Gustavo Petro called on the crowds gathered outside city hall to occupy public squares in the largest protest ever seen in Bogota. Petro was ousted by Colombia’s leading prosecutor over the alleged mismanagement of the city’s refuse collection. The Inspector General Alejandro Ordonez said the mayor had violated the constitution and broke environmental regulations when he ruled that the city should take control of rubbish collection in 2012. The mayor claims the decision was taken to save Bogota money. As well being sacked Petro has been banned from holding public office for 15 years. The Inter-American Human Rights Commission is reviewing the case.
