New Zealand pilots Dennis Horn and Manfred Scherbius managed two lucky escapes in a single flight. They walked away unscathed after an emergency landing on this beach - then repeated the feat when their efforts to take off again ended even in spectacular failure. Horn said the drama started when the aircraft's new engine cut out on its maiden flight. (SOUNDBITE)(English) PILOT DENNIS HORN SAYING: "Basically the engine stopped. Sort of thing the pilot doesn't want to hear, especially if he's only got one engine." They'd managed to gate-crash a sandcastle-building contest on the beach at Martin's Bay to the surprise of those taking part. (SOUNDBITE)(English) UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN ON BEACH SAYING: "Everyone just ran down the beach because we thought maybe he'd had a heart attack."
