Hundreds of thousands of Americans woke up to a Christmas morning without power Wednesday as crews battled to restore electricity to parts of the Midwest and Northeast following an ice storm. The worst affected state was Michigan, with about 180,000 homes and businesses still without power, utilities companies said. Maine, with its far smaller population, was proportionally hardiest hit. More than 70,000 customers in the Pine Tree State woke up on Christmas Day without electricity. About 1,800 people in Vermont and 500 in New York state were still waiting to be reconnected to the grid. With temperatures far below freezing, ice on power lines was refusing to budgeafter the severe weekend weather .
