Virgil Thomson was an American composer and music journalist with a strong independent streak. As a as a critic, he once described his popular fellow contemporary composer Sibelius as "vulgar, self–indulgent and provincial beyond all description." Thomson composed pieces for the Federal Theatre Project and wrote film scores for documentaries about government recovery projects during the Depression. Seattle Weekly music critic Gavin Borchert says he admires Thomson's music and his writing. But Virgil Thomson was often out of step with the times.
