Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh took charge as the new Science, Technology and Earth Science Minister on Tuesday, a week after the Cabinet re-shuffles. Mr. Deshmukh was shifted from the politically high profile Rural Development Ministry to Science, Technology and Earth Science Ministry. He is the 4th Science and Technology Minister in last18 months.

Deshmukh said, “I have taken charge of the office today and I need to understand a lot of things. The subject is relatively new for me. Since the subject is new, it is better to understand it first before giving any opinion or statement on any related matter. Therefore I need some time to understand everything and after that I will talk to media persons.”

In political circles, the reshuffle of Deshmukh is being considered as demotion but he rejected these claims and expressed his happiness with the new responsibility. He said, “There is no demotion…at the Central level, you can only be a Cabinet minister and that is equivalent to being promoted. There is no demotion then, politics is like kho-kho.”

Deshmukh had canceled the swearing-in ceremony for becoming the President of the Mumbai Cricket Association at Rashtrapati Bhawan. He beat former Indian cricket team captain Dilip Vengsarkar, last week.
