According to a latest report, there are around 95,000 adolescents are living in India with HIV and approx 2500 young people of age between 15 to 24 years are being infected with this dangerous virus every day. India has been ranked 10th in the list of nations most affected with HIV in 2009. The country has 46,000 infected girls and 49,000 boys in the age group of 10 to 19 years.

The report of UN said, the epidemic is driven mostly by sex workers and 4.9% of female sex workers are HIV positive. India was progressing in providing sexual education by political opposition and overcoming socio-cultural problems. Report also said that while HIV prevalence refused slightly among young people, young women and adolescent girls face a high risk of infection due to social inequality, exclusion and biological vulnerability in India.

An Executive Director of UNICEF, Anthony Lake commented, “For many young people, HIV infection is the result of neglect, exclusion and violations that occur with the knowledge of families, communities, social and political leaders.”

South Africa has first rank with 2, 10,000 girls and 82,000 boys infected with HIV virus whereas Nigeria at 2nd position with 1, 80, 000 girls and 1, 00,000 boys. The report was released on Wednesday which says that most infected adolescents are women and they do not know their status.
