Recycling old cell phones is always a good thing to do... but surprisingly, cell phones have a direct tie to the welfare of the world’s dwindling population of gorillas. The connection goes like this: Coltan is a metallic ore. When it’s refined into a powder, it can store energy and regulate voltage in cell phones. Coltan is mined in the Congo, the home of lowland gorillas, so forests there are quickly being cleared—and you can imagine what clearing forests is doing to these gorillas.
